My Brief

'Wish you were here!’- Strategies for sophisticated post-apocalyptic living.

Would you use a Knife & Fork?

Climate change has transformed the world as we know it forever, there are limited animals or food with the rise in temperature; the earth and landscape are not the same but buildings and homes are still untouched, due to the higher temperatures there are fewer people to occupy them everyday.

Humans that lived in the colder areas of the world haven’t survived as they are not acclimatised to such heat, however those nearer to what was the equator have been ‘lucky’ enough to have managed so far.

But as the Earths temperature is forever getting hotter and more food is becoming scarce. The People that remain are constantly dying of heat extortion and heat stroke along with other contributing factors like starvation because it is very much every man for themselves.

Before the world had been victim to such adverse change there were a sense of right and wrong, however now those principles have been distorted and what was right and wrong now becomes dignity and survival.

My final outcome will be an adaptation of a recipe book. It will be of ‘homemade family favourites’. The recipe book will show how the world has adapted to the new style of living. It will include how to dissect, prepare and cook a human being and a glossary of terms towards the back. I will experiment through different materials and media to try and create a successful outcome.  To accompany the Recipe book I will do an installation of a ‘Romantic dinner for two’. The installation will have low lighting to create ambience. It will give the impression of a candle-lit dinner and a sense of togetherness. The food would be from my recipe book.

Cannibalism is frowned upon in many countries; however that was before drastic depletion of food. I will research into the history of cannibalism and survival to broaden my field of knowledge.

The rules of eating have to be rewritten and my aim is to get others thinking of – how would you eat a human? Would you boil them? Fry them? Bake them? What would accompany your dish? Would you sit at a dinner table? Would there be some sort of ritual? Would you say grace or give thanks? Would you use a knife and fork?
