Idea Presentation

Here is some extracts from my ideas presentation to be shown on Thursday the 2nd Feb.
I have been watching films and gaining inspiration throughout the past week or so. I have started on my recipe book and i am constantly thinking about how i might present it on display. Considering context and so forth.
In addition i will have a 'romantic dinner for two' to give a visual.

...

Here is an image i created from magazine and, watercolour and a embosser. It is for the 'oesophagus pie'
the magazine is this style throughout. I thought that it was this style was most appropraite as i experimented with collage and then i tried just watercolour. This outcome looked the best and i thought it looked professional - like it had been bought off the shelf.

The rules of eating have to be rewritten and my aim is to get others thinking of – how would you eat a human? Would you boil them? Fry them? Bake them? What would accompany your dish? Would you sit at a dinner table? Would there be some sort of ritual? Would you say grace or give thanks? Would you use a knife and fork?

Murder and survival
The Aztecs are believed to have practised cannibalism on a large scale as part of the ritual religious sacrifice of war captives in a practice known as exocannibalism - the eating of strangers or enemies
Aboriginal Australians are meanwhile believed in- endocannibalism - the consumption of friends and relatives, who are usually dead. In this case, the body of a dead person was ritually eaten by his relatives as a means of allowing his spirit to live on

History also provides ample examples of cannibalism during famine and other periods of severe shortages.

Survival cannibalism was made famous by the film Alive, based on the 1972 air crash in the Andes, when surviving members of the Uruguayan rugby team ate the dead to stay alive.

Its slightly distorted for some reason but This is the front cover of my recipe book i think it turned out better than i expected. I chose to have the pie on the front as it was the most 'appetising'
i included the saying "willful waste makes woeful want"
its the original qoute from waste not want not.
i included this because it is appropraite - when times are hard you cant afford to waste food. exspecially if it means survival.

My Brief

'Wish you were here!’- Strategies for sophisticated post-apocalyptic living.

Would you use a Knife & Fork?

Climate change has transformed the world as we know it forever, there are limited animals or food with the rise in temperature; the earth and landscape are not the same but buildings and homes are still untouched, due to the higher temperatures there are fewer people to occupy them everyday.

Humans that lived in the colder areas of the world haven’t survived as they are not acclimatised to such heat, however those nearer to what was the equator have been ‘lucky’ enough to have managed so far.

But as the Earths temperature is forever getting hotter and more food is becoming scarce. The People that remain are constantly dying of heat extortion and heat stroke along with other contributing factors like starvation because it is very much every man for themselves.

Before the world had been victim to such adverse change there were a sense of right and wrong, however now those principles have been distorted and what was right and wrong now becomes dignity and survival.

My final outcome will be an adaptation of a recipe book. It will be of ‘homemade family favourites’. The recipe book will show how the world has adapted to the new style of living. It will include how to dissect, prepare and cook a human being and a glossary of terms towards the back. I will experiment through different materials and media to try and create a successful outcome.  To accompany the Recipe book I will do an installation of a ‘Romantic dinner for two’. The installation will have low lighting to create ambience. It will give the impression of a candle-lit dinner and a sense of togetherness. The food would be from my recipe book.

Cannibalism is frowned upon in many countries; however that was before drastic depletion of food. I will research into the history of cannibalism and survival to broaden my field of knowledge.

Ideas & Development

After the first group crit on Thursday the 19th Jan, I went with the 'Romantic dinner for two' idea.

Other people seemed to have really good ideas too and it was great to hear everyone's opinions.

I have to decide now whether i want to have...

  • set in a restaurant
  • set at home
i have to think of the context and i have found a bistro set from argos at £ 49.99

if it was set in a home setting i could have a mat under the table and mood lighting.

My other idea to accompany my outcome would be either a receipt book 'homemade favorites' like  'intestine soup' rather than 'minstrone soup' etc

or if it were in a restaurant a 'menu'

i would also use pretend body parts (like the ones sold at Halloween) to use for the 'dinner' or 'pudding'

Its all about the consept of what is right and wrong - and what becomes right and wrong.

Diginity vs survivial and every man for themselves.

Wish you were here - startegies for sophisticated post-apocalyptic living

To sum up the new project it is about survival after the end of the world as we know it. The task is to explore how art and design become key to understanding change and adapting to the new world that is unfamiliar and that has been changed forever.

My initial ideas from yesterdays presentation in preparation for our first group tutorial tomorrow were as follows:

  • create/ design a collection of items that are highly functional and can be a necessity made from non - necessity items.
  • do an installation piece that has a dining room table set for two - a romantic theme. but have the food (the pudding) made from 'human beings' (obviously not actually made from humans, but made from things that are to give the impression!!) - the idea is to give 'dignity' to survival.
Ideas TBC...

I have watched the following films in order to gain inspiration for the project:
  • i Robot
  • Terminator 2
  • 28 days later
  • I am legend
  • Contagion
  •
Key Words:
  • exploration
  • civilisation
  • adaptation
  • de-organisation
  • routine and order
  • de-humanising
  • selection
  • normalisation
  • necessity
  • modification
  • dignity
  • depletion
  • Holocaust
  •
    TBC!!

Term two - CHC

The 'homework' from the first CHC lesson was to bring in a "self portrait" of yourself - whether that be a portrait of your outside or inside through any medium.

Examples such as songs, poems, images, a traditional portrait etc.

For mine i have this favorite poem of mine

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other
people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Jenny Joseph

This is my outcome:

I really love this peom as i consider my personality to be as an old women - and i have a lot of purple clothes. I also love traditional crafts like knitting, sewing and craft. I chose to sew the poem as i think that it reflects my personality and reflects the poem well.

Term two Starter Project

Launch and the first day back we were all given a task to and present on Thursday.

The Project title is 'Eat your art out'

The task is to recreate an art or design classic but only using edible ingredients. We have to consider texture, flavour, presentation and colour. Then we will present in front of the the group and then consume together.

In groups of 4/5 that were made for us we have the Tree-trunk bench by Jurgen Bey.

A fallen tree can serve as a seat. The addition of bronze classical chair backs makes it a proper piece of furniture, a crossing between nature and culture. Jurgen Bey makes clear that it is ridiculous to transport trees when they are locally available. Therefore only the chair backs are for sale.

Our initial idea was to make part of the log breakfast/lunch/dinner and then it turned into starter/main/dessert.

This however wouldn't fit the brief as it wouldnt be the same colour.

In the end and after much discussion we decided to go with the concept of it looks functional but looks slightly uncomfortable.

So then going with our Chocolate swiss roll idea we decided to add boiled sweets in the icing for the top because it will look yummy to eat but actually is uncomfortable to chew.

As pictured below we experimented with how we could make the chairs. we tried:

- chocolate fingers
-matchstick chocolate
- Melted chocolate and shaped
- Tall shaped biscuits

These chairs above we decided that these were the best.

We then went shopping and found some icing pens. to give them an extra boost.

We added the remainder of the icing ontop of the chocolate to make it look more realistic.
