Make or design something that unfolds, opens out or spreads out...

After my tutorial and much deliberation i went to an antiques barn and bought some different old books, one about the scout movement, one with old geogrpahical maps in and an old 1812 story book.

I started with the scouting movement and created this using a scalpol, images and pages from the book and double sided tape:

then the idea came to me that i could either do a stop motion animation of him walking from page to page or even do a series of photographs of 'scenes' or maybe have around 7 display stands - which i could make myself... the outcome idea TBC...!

Create a White object with 57 sides...

After my second tutorial I was inspired to do something more constructive instead of using paper. The first idea was to do a wooden sculpture and paint it white, inspired by this paper one i did previously:

However today i have been working on my ideas and developing them and I have been experimenting with different 'white' items such as white foam board as opposed to wood.

Here is my outcome...

After thinking, i realised that if i broke it down to a 1 sided shape - a sphere and do 57. because the brief is to have a 57 white sided 3D Shape so i could do 57 white balloons, hanging or floating from the floor or ceiling in a grouped form. Something like this...

Photography Workshop Part two

Today I took part in a practical Photography Workshop with Stewart. It involved recapping on yesterdays information and what We had learnt. We had a total of three exercises to complete throughout the day.
Exercises one was to Put the camera on full manual and then set the aperture to F5.6 Then with the ISO Set at 100 take the same photograph using the following shutter speeds...

Shutter Speed 4...
Shutter Speed 8...

Shutter Speed 15...

Shutter Speed 30...

Shutter Speed 60...

Shutter Speed 125...

Shutter Speed 250...

Shutter Speed 500...

Exercise 2 was to do the same again but change the shutter speed to 125 and set the ISO to 100 and then changing the aperture settings to the following...

Aperture 4...

Aperture 5.6...

Aperture 8...

Aperture 11...

Aperture 16

Exercise three, was to go into Stirchley and walk down the High Street. The Task was to take a series of photographs using the Nikons with the project titles of:
  •  Thee portraits of people you don't know
  •  Two Contrasting Landscapes
  •  Something Ugly
  •  Something Beautiful
  •  Something
  •  Nothing

Here are the best ones:

Photography Workshop

 .

Today I did the Photography Workshop, I learnt different skills and techniques possible with a digital SLR. Today was very useful and inspiring and i was constantly generating ideas on how i can apply this into my work - not nessecarliy as a photographer but more as presentation aspect. I learnt that there is so much you can do on one and that there are loads of different skills and techniques to create visually stunning photos. Todays topics were:
  • White balance
  • ISO
  • Aperture
  • Shutter Speed
  • Focus
  • different types of Lenses
  • How to handle a camera
  • Amongst other useful technical aspects of photography.
We all got a chance to have a go and experiment with the Universitys Nikon Digital SLR's.

I am also inspired to invest in a compact system camera.

Here are the best outcomes from today...

Experimenting with Shutter Speed:

All in Focus:

Aperture Practice:

We Orignally shot these in RAW and then after changed them to JPEG's using Photoshop. To add them on my Blog i also had to compress them to Web size.

Paper Art

Trying out some of my own paper engineering. Generating ideas for the Object project - Create a white 3D object with 57 sides. Even though these don't necessarily have 57 sides i would decide which design is most appropriate and modify it to have 57 sides.

This is my favorite one below...

Make or Design something which unfolds, opens out or spreads out

This project title sounded so exciting - there are so many ways i could potentially take it! I really like the idea of taking a book - which opens and make it unfold and the subject matter could be about spreading out.

The subject matter needs to have an appropraite link maybe to population growth or maybe desease as these all relate to spreading. Or maybe something very boring and turning the pages into something really fasinating through paper art.

I love artists like Cara Barer (featured above), Su Blackwell, Georgia Russell and Pater Callesen

Appropriate rearrange and reanimate all the images from a single magazine or newspaper

For the Image project of the Field Guide i have decided to do 'Appropriate rearrange and reanimate all the images from a single magazine or newspaper' because i do read a lot of magazines and newspapers.

Spelling is not my strong point and i really want to express this in one of my projects. i received a chain email from a friend with this passage...
I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg the phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer inwaht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh? yaeh and I awlyas thought slpeling was ipmorantt.

With this in mind i then tried to apply this technique to magazine adverts and an article in a newspaper.
Can you work out what they say?

Experimentation & Inspiration

I begun work yesterday and today on experimenting with paper and card - because they are white in colour and i am very much influenced by paper art. Creating 57 sides is harder than I originally assumed. I could use polystyrene or tissue as an alternative.

I am inspired by Origami, Ingrid Siliakus and Yoko Nishimura.

Here are some of my designs, I am planning to develop them and I am currently working on other items to see which design/ outcome will be most appropriate.

(I would make the shape on the far left with cubes. 9 x 6 = 54 and therefore need 3 extra sides)

Inspired by a shell from my collection...
Another idea was to fold paper and construct a abstract sculpture with architecture in mind!
